General Characteristics

  • Peas are the most heavily imported pulse into India. In 2002-03, peas accounted for 39% of India's total pulse imports. India imports peas in dried and shelled form and also in frozen form as a vegetable. Canada, Australia, Myanmar are the major countries importing peas from India. France has also turned into a major importer in the recent years.
  • India does not produce any significant quantities of yellow peas. Almost the entire quantity traded in the country is imported. 
  • The major players in the yellow peas value chain in India are importers, their brokers, stockists, wholesale traders, and retail outlets. The information flow is restricted to the major wholesale traders and stockists.

  • Mumbai, Jalgaon, Latur, Akola in Maharashtra . 
  • Indore, Bhopal, Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh .

  • The sentiments of traders play a significant role currently, as a consequence of the lack of free-flow of information. 
  • Stocks present with stockists and the stocks-to-consumption ratio. 
  • Imports and the crop situation in the countries from where imports originate, viz., Canada, Australia, France.
  • The price of other major pulses like chana, tur, urad, green peas etc also influence the prices of yellow peas.
